Youngster stabbed to death in Schaarbeek

A young man is dead after he was fatally injured during a stabbing on the Liedtsplein in the Brussels borough of Schaarbeek on New Year's Eve.

Prosecutors say that two groups had gathered on the square on New Year's Eve.  Around 3AM an argument ensued triggering the stabbing.  The young man was stabbed twice and taken to hospital.  Surgeons struggled to save him, but he died an hour later.  On New Year's Day police were still trying to establish his identity and that of his attacker.  An examining magistrate has been appointed and a post mortem is planned for today.
