The Judicial Authorities have launched an investigation into a hit and run accident allegedly involving the former Ghent City Alderman Resul Tapmaz (socialist). Mr Tapmaz is alleged to have driven off after having been involved in a collision with a cyclist. The cyclists was seriously injured in the accident.

At the beginning of December Mr Tapmaz announced that he intended to bow out of politics. Despite having gained 4,300 preference vote in October’s municipal elections, he decided not to take his seat on Ghent City Council. Mr Tapmaz had been a Ghent City Alderman for 9 years.
