Hi-Viz protester dies in Visé

An activist taking part in the Hi-Viz protests has been run down by a lorry on the E25 motorway between Liège and Maastricht.  The activist, who was in his fifties, was blocking the motorway in Visé at the time.

The accident happened as protests were staged against taxes on fuel and loss of spending power.  One activist was run over and died at the scene.  Police ordered the lorry driver to stop, but he later drove off.  Witnesses say that the lorry had Dutch plates.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office noted that police had asked to driver to stop at a nearby carpark, but that when they arrived there he had disappeared.  A traffic expert is now examining how the accident occurred.
