Trucker accused of killing Hi-Viz protester has given himself up

A Dutch lorry driver that ran over and killed a Hi-Viz protester at Visé in Liège Province has given himself up to the Belgian Judicial Authorities. He is now being questioned by the Federal Police. On Monday the Liège Judicial Authorities reported that they wanted to question a lorry driver from Landgraaf in the Dutch province of Limburg.

A 50-year-old Hi-Viz protester was killed when he was hit by a lorry during a demonstration at Visé, between Liège and Maastricht on Friday evening. The Belgian Judicial Authorities believe that the driver deliberately ran over the protester. However, the driver’s solicitor Richard Wagemans has told the Dutch press agency ANP that what happened was an accident.

The Judicial Authorities had already issued a European arrest warrant for the arrest of a 56-year-old trucker from Dongen in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The man was detained, but later released after it emerged that the police had passed on the registration number of the wrong vehicle.
