Belgian Foreign Minister regrets “a certain lack of transparency” in Congolese elections

The Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders (Francophone liberal) has reacted to the decision of the Congolese Constitutional Court to declare Félix Tshisekedi the winner of the presidential elections. Mr Reynders said in a statement that he has “taken note” of the decision.

The Foreign Minister added that he believed that the electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo could have been more transparent.

"We would have preferred the process to have proceeded in a climate of greater transparency.

Mr Reynders added that in the first instance it was up to the Congolese people themselves and country in the region to comment about the legitimacy of the result.

Mr Reynders concluded by saying that he hoped that there wouldn’t be any violence in the Central African country.
