More police officers for Port of Zeebrugge

Belgian home minister Pieter De Crem (Flemish Christian democrat) has announced more police officers will be deployed at the Port of Zeebrugge.  The extra staff will be used to target people-traffickers who try to smuggle migrants to the UK via the port.  The migrants are stowed away on lorries that make the crossing via Zeebrugge.

Mr De Crem made his announcement during a visit to Flanders’ second largest port.  The extra police officers will also come in handy to deal with any issues posed by Brexit, the UK's departure from the EU.  The new officers will all be trained at the local West Flemish police academy and won't have to serve a stint outside the province to start off their police career.
