Fleming to direct "War of the Worlds"

Bruges-born director Gilles Coulier is to direct part of the new international series "War of the Worlds".  The series is based on H. G. Wells's novel published in 1899.

Coulier's version will be set in today's Europe and will show what remains of humanity on our planet after an attack by extra-terrestrials.

32-year-old Coulier (photo below) earned his spurs on "Bevergem" (pictured above), "Cargo" and "De dag" and told VRT's Ward Verrijcken he was ready for a new challenge: ""War of the Worlds" feels like the logical next step.  It's a great honour to draw out the lines for this prestigious international production and to be able to work with a fabulous cast."

The Fleming managed to sign up the Irish actor Gabriel Byrne ("The Usual Suspects", "In Treatment") and the American actress Elizabeth McGovern of "Downton Abbey" fame.

Coulier is only one of a series of Flemish directors who have made a mark abroad: Tim Mielants with "Peaky blinders" and "Legion" and Jakob Verbruggen with "House of Cards" and "The Alienist".

The Belgian production house De Wereldvrede is responsible for the continental part of the production of War of the Worlds".  It is being filmed in the UK and France and will be broadcast in eight episodes at the end of the year.  Richard Clark of "Versailles" fame will also direct four episodes.
