Two people have been detained in connection with the shooting and a gun has been confiscated. The Brederodestraat has been closed to traffic while the investigation into the shooting continues.
The shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon in the street that is in the Antwerp South area of the city. The Brederodestraat has often been the scene of tension between the Turkish and Kurdish communities that live in the area.
According to witness at the scene, Saturday shooting was related to an ongoing dispute between the two groups. The close of the street has meant that services on tram route 10 are interrupted.
Willem Migom of the Antwerp Local Police Service told VRT News that “The forensic lab will look for evidence, while detectives will try to find what led up to and the circumstances surrounding the shooting”.
