Belgium through to Davis Cup final week

Belgium has qualified for the final week of the new-look Davis Cup in November. Our men did so thanks to a 1-3 win this weekend against Brazil. With Belgium already two matches up, Sunday’s planned fifth game became surplus to requirement.

This year the Davis Cup is somewhat different to what we have been used too. Which country has the best men’s tennis team will be decided during the final week in November in which 18 countries. However, to earn a place in the final week that will take place in Madrid, the Belgian team had to beat Brazil in the qualifying round.

And beat them they did. Day one on Friday ended 1-1. However, Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen were able to get the better of Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo and it was 1-2 to Belgium. Kimmer Coppejans victory in his match against Thiago Monteiro meant that Belgium were 1-3 up and had earned a place in the final week.

The final week will be held between 18 and 24 November. As well as Belgium, Croatia, France, Spain, the US, Argentina, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, Chili, Colombia, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Serbia and Switzerland have also qualified
