Mouscron drop points for the first time this year

In the first of this weekend’s Belgian First Division games Excel Mouscron failed to make it 7 straight wins. Bernd Storck’s men draw 1-1 away at Standard de Liège in a match that saw them (correctly) have two goals disallowed in the closing stages.

The first half was goalless and at times boring. Mouscron’s first chance fell to Amallah. However, the Standard keeper Ochoa was on hand to deny him.

Standard first chance fell to Emond. He only had the Mouscron keeper Butez to beat, but lacked that finishing touch.

After an enjoyable start much of the rest of the first half was less so. Things picked up a bit during the closing stage of the half when Emond came close to scoring on the counter. However, as earlier in the half poor finishing meant that the score remained 0-0.

Second half goals

Mouscron’s defence was caught on the hop 9 minutes into the second half when Marin scored from Kosanovic corner (celebrations, photo below). However, Standard’s joy was short-lived when Amallah produced what was the best move of the evening, providing Friede with all he needed to put Mouscron level on 60 minutes.

The goal knocked the stuffing out of Standard. Mouscron took command without really posing much danger in front of goal.

Mouscron hit the back of the net twice in injury time. However, both goals were disallowed, the first for pushing and the second for off-side.

The match ended 1-1, a result that pleased neither team. Standard remain 3rd with 47 points from 28 games. However, they could slip back a couple of places depending on how Sint-Truiden and RFC Antwerp do in their respective games. Excel Mouscron are 10th with 36 points.
