Former Belgian Primate laid to rest

The funeral has taken place at Saint-Rombouts Cathedral in Mechelen of the former Head of the Roman Catholic Church in Belgium Cardinal Godfried Danneels. Cardinal Danneels died last week aged 85. The funeral services was attended by more than 25 bishops and 150 priests. 

A number of politicians, academics and members of the royal family were also among the mourners.       

The current Belgian Primate Cardinal de Kesel led the funeral Mass that got underway at 11am. Well-known figures at the funeral include King Filip and Queen Mathilde, Princess Astrid and Prince Laurent, the Federal Deputy Prime Minister Kris Peeters, the Federal Justice Minister Koen Geens and the Interior Minister Pieter De Crem (all Flemish Christian democrat).

The Mayor of Mechelen Bart Somers and several of the city’s alderman also attended the funeral as did a number of ordinary people from Mechelen and beyond.
