10,239 Belgians in UK registered to vote for Belgian candidates in the European elections

The Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders (Francophone liberal) says that he welcomes the fact that more than 10,000 Belgians living in the UK have registered to vote for Belgian candidates in the forthcoming European elections. The 10,239 Belgians were all registered to vote in the Federal Elections before 1 February.

The Home Affairs Select Committee of the Chamber of Representatives has approved an amendment to the Brexit law that means that

Belgians living in the UK that have registered  approved an amendment to the BREXIT law concerning the elections of the European Parliament.

As things stand the United Kingdom will leave the European Union either on 12 April or 22 May. As such no European elections will be held in the UK. Thanks to the amended law, Belgians living there will therefore be considered as residing outside of the EU, with the right to vote.
