3,500 people evacuated after suspicious package found in Ghent

Around 3,500 were evacuated after a suspicious package was found between two parked cars on the Karel Lodewijk Ledeganckstraat in the East Flemish city of Ghent on Monday afternoon. The package turned out to be harmless and those that were evacuated have been allowed to return.  

The street where the suspicious package was found is home to a number of education institutions such as a campus of Ghent University a campus of the HoGent institute of higher education and a primary school. The suspicious package turned out to be an empty suitcase.  

It was found at around 2:30pm. It was decided that the entire street should be evacuated. As well the many students that were in the area, the residents of around a dozen houses were also told to leave their homes.  

The bomb disposal service DOVO went to scene and started an investigation. By 4pm it had become clear that the suitcase was empty. Those that had been evacuated were allowed to return.
