1.3 million day trippers expected at the coast during the Easter holidays

With the schools breaking up for their 2 week Easter break on Friday afternoon the resorts along the West Flemish coast are bracing themselves for a greater than normal influx of visitors between now and Easter Monday. The West Flemish tourist board Westtoer has set it sites high, aiming for 1.3 million day trippers at the coast over the next 17 days.

The long Easter weekend (20 – 22 April) is expected to be exceptionally busy.  hile there is expected to be a large number of day trippers, hotel bookings for the Easter period have started sluggishly.

The Head of Westtoer Sabien Lahaye-Battheu told journalists that "The ten coastal municipalities kick off the tourist season by ensuring a special holiday atmosphere. 2018 was an excellent year for tourism. We have noticed that more than the coastal region stands outs as a top destination in all seasons”.

Nevertheless, there are still plenty of hotel rooms vacant at the coast.

"Holiday makers are waiting longer to book”, Francis Bosschem of vzw Kusthotels told journalists.

"During the first weekend 60% of the rooms are book. This rises to 80% for the long weekend”.

The largest group (36%) of those that have booked a hotel room are from Flanders. Francophone Belgians form the second largest group among those that have booked hotel rooms.
