Experienced Flemish diver perishes in the UK

Diver Carol Vannieuwenhuyze died in Plymouth in the south of England on Friday after getting into difficulty in the water. The diver, a 58-year-old man, and familiar figure in his native Ingelmunster (West Flanders) became unwell while he was in the water.  He signalled to a friend that he needed to be brought to the surface and was taken on board a ship.

Carol was flown to hospital by helicopter where he later died.  He was an experienced diver and diving instructor.  An autopsy is being carried out on Tuesday to determine the cause of his death.  After this post-mortem Carol's body can be repatriated to Belgium for the funeral.
