Suspect confesses to the murder of Julie Van Espen

The man detained in connection with the murder of Julie Van Espen Steve Bakelmans confessed to her murder. Julie Van Espen went missing on Saturday evening. Her body was found on Monday afternoon in the Albert Canal in the Antwerp district of Mechelen. Steve Bakelmans has now been arrested on suspicion of murder and will remain in custody.  

The 39-year-old from Antwerp was detained by police in a train at the station in Flemish Brabant city of Leuven on Monday. He was questioned by an Examining Magistrate who made the decision to arrest him for Julie Van Espen’s murder.     

The Judicial Authorities have said in a statement that “He has said that he is responsible for what happened to Julie”.

As a mark of respect for the victim and her relatives the Judicial Authorities refrained from further comment.   

Steve Bakelmans will appear before magistrates on Friday who will decided on whether he will remain in custody.
