Man dies after police chase in which shots were fired

A man that had been pursued by police who fired shots at his car has died. The incident happen in the Waterschei district of the Limburg city of Genk. The exact circumstances of the incident currently being investigated. There is a possibility that the man was killed by a police bullet.     

The police were chasing the man in connection with reports they had received  of a burglary.  Shots were fired and the man crashed into a tree alongside the Onderwijslaan in Waterschei. He tried to make his escape on foot. His body was found a little later in a garden. An investigation has been launched to see if his death was caused by a police bullet.    

The area where the incident happened has been sealed off. A police surgeon and a ballistics expert are at the scene. An Examining Magistrate has been appointed and the investigation is being carried out by the Federal Police.
