First edition of Belgian Coast Walk is a big success

The first edition of the Belgian Coast Walk has attracted about 2,600 participants. The organisers are thrilled: "We hope that this can become a real classic."

Ramblers had the choice between walking the whole coastline (from Knokke to De Panne, some 80 kilometres), and walks of 42 km, 14 km and 7 km around the place of arrival,  De Panne, at the south-western tip of the Belgian coastline near France.

Organisers Golazo and Wandelsport Vlaanderen wanted to make it a big "happening", and were satisfied: "We are thrilled with the big number of people taking part. We hope this can become a classic."

The course was designed to have some different landscapes: the beach, the boardwalk, dunes and natural areas including the Schipgatduinen and the Hoge Blekker, the highest dune at the Belgian coast peaking at some 33 metres. Next year, the coastal walk will take place on 9 May, when ramblers will go the other way, from De Panne to Knokke.
