20th victim of legionella outbreak hospitalised

A 20th person has been found to have contracted legionella. Like the other victims of the recent outbreak, he is from the Evergem area of East Flanders.  The man is currently receiving treatment in Ghent University Hospital. The Care and Health Agency reports that the man’s condition is stable and not critical.

As we reported on Friday a 19th victim of the outbreak was admitted to the Jan Palfijn hospital in Ghent. He had first displayed symptoms on 13 May.

Here too, the patient’s condition is not life-threatening. Public health experts are now looking into to what link the two men have with the source of the infection.

Up until now the legionella outbreak in East Flanders has claimed two lives. A total of 20 people have become infected, 6 of whom have since recovered enough to be discharged from hospital.
