Fleming receives the “Nobel Prize for Youth Literature”

The Flemish author Bart Meoyaert has received Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award at a ceremony held in the Swedish capital Stockholm. Bart Moyaert was presented with the award that is often referred to as “The Nobel Prize for Youth Literature” for the Swedish Crown Princess Viktoria.  The prize is named after the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren who wrote the Pipi Longstocking books. The prize is worth 480,000 euro.

The award’s ceremony in Stockholm in Monday was part of a host of literature-based festivities.

Bart Moeyaert told VRT News that while he was pleased and honoured to have been given the award he was above all delighted and moved by the report that the jury had written about his work.

“It made me incredibly emotional because they literally said that like Astrid Lindgren I stand up for the loner. Someone that is outside the group, doesn’t think this is a bad thing, but also wants to be seen. And then I realised that this something that I have done in all my books.

"And it is of course super when a jury says openly that you have been following the spirit of Lindgren’s work for many years”.
