One in ten Flemings living in poverty

According to figures from the Flemish Bureau of Statistics Statistiek Vlaanderen around 680,000 in our region were living under the poverty line in 2018. This is around 1 in 10 of the total population of Flanders. In 2018 the poverty line in Belgium was set at a net income of 1,187 euro/month for a single person and 2,493 euro/month for a couple with 2 children.

The figures released on Tuesday show that 10% of Flemings have less than this. The percentage of people living on or below the poverty line in Flanders has remained more or less stable.

Compared with Wallonia and Brussels the percentage of Flemings living on or below the poverty line is relatively low. In Wallonia 22% of people were in poverty in 2018, while in the Brussels-Capital Region 1 in 3 people were on or below the poverty line in 2018.

In Belgium as a whole 16% of people were in poverty in 2018. This is around 1 in 6 of the people that live here.
