Work-to-rule at Zaventem

Unions at baggage handler Swissport at Brussels Airport staged a work to rule from 8AM till 10AM this morning.  The unions warned this could lead to delays.  Because it was especially white collar staff working to rule the travelling public felt little of the protest.

The unions are unhappy about staff shortages and talks with the management on Monday made no headway.  The unions say staff shortages endanger safety and employees’ health. They are also worried about the company’s future and speak of a lack of investment.  The unions decided on a work-to-rule rather than a strike not to inconvenience passengers too much.

The unions have stopped talking with the management and are seeking the appointment of a social mediator.

Brussels Airlines that is Swissport’s biggest customer at the airport has its own team at the ready at Zaventem, but says it can’t deal with all eventualities.
