Informateurs’ mission extended until 9 September

The Belgian Head of State King Filip has extend the mission of the two men charged with paving the way for talks to commence on the formation of a new Federal Government by another 6 weeks. Didier Reynders (Francophone liberal) and Johan Vande Lanotte (Flemish socialist) now have until 9 September to continue their work. Bi-lateral talks will continue over the next few weeks.

Mr Reynders and Mr Vande Lanotte were first appointed to the post of Informateur on 30 May. Their mission was extended on 1 July and has now been further extended again, this time until 9 September.

The Informateurs’ primary aim is to examine the possibility of the two largest parties, the Francophone socialist and the Flemish nationalist working together to help form a Federal Government. Little progress has been made in the 9 weeks since the election. However, Mr Reynders and Mr Vande Lanotte say that they are ”a little bit optimistic” in the light of Sunday’s multi-party meeting at which both the Francophone socialists and the Flemish nationalist were in attendance.
