21-year-old man drowns in Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal

A 21-year-old man from the Brussels municipality of Schaarbeek has drowned after he and a group of friends went swimming in a canal in West Flanders. The group ignored a bathing ban and went swimming in the Bossuit-Kortrijk in the south of the province. The man disappeared under the water and never resurfaced. Fire Service divers attended the scene on Monday evening and were able to recover the man from under the water. He was resuscitated on the canal bank, but later died.    

The dead man has family in Kortrijk and he and some of his friends decided to go swimming in the canal. Went he submerged and failed to resurface at the Visserskaai, he friends called the emergency services.   

After having been resuscitated at the scene by Fire Service divers, the man was taken to AZ Groeninge Hospital in Kortrijk where he later died.  

Vincent Remy of the West Flemish Judicial Authorities told VRT News that "We assume that he got into difficulty because of the current. As a result of this he ended up getting stuck in vegetation”.

Since last a ban on swimming in navigable waterways has been in force in Kortrijk. The ban covers rivers such as the River Leie and the Bossuit-Kortijk Canal.
