“Prosecutors must take action against councillor who made raw, racist comments”

The Mayor of Vilvoorde, Hans Bonte (Flemish socialist), is demanding that the judicial authorities take action against Vilvoorde councillor Jurgen Van Duyse (Vlaams Belang), who he accuses of making hard-core racist comments.  On Facebook Mr Van Duyse posted: “I am allergic to browns”.

Mayor Bonte (pictured left) told VRT News: “Mr Van Duyse (pictured right) is a hard-core racist.  He makes the most raw, racist comments.  I hope that the judicial authorities that have the job of guarding compliance with anti-discrimination legislation see this too and take adequate action.”

Earlier a dossier compiled by the daily Het Laatste Nieuws identified Mr Van Duyse as a Vlaams Belang member with Nazi sympathies.  At the beginning of the year he attended a Vilvoorde council meeting with a T-shirt supporting the far right Schild & Vrienden organisation.  Mr Van Duyse made his recent Facebook comment on their page.

Mayor Bonte: “Our coalition agreement states that every form of racism must be addressed.  I’m going to scrutinise the councillors’ code of conduct to see if it has been violated. But let me be clear: this is this is a crime that prosecutors must address.  To my mind it’s taking them too long to act.”
