Price of air tickets rises twice as fast as inflation

The price of air tickets in Belgium has risen nearly 30% since 2010.  The rise is nearly double that of inflation during the same period.

It’s above all flights to European destinations that have become dearer.  During the same period long haul flights became cheaper.  The price hike comes amid growing demand.  Demand rose 50% in Belgium, while across the globe demand for flights is up 62.3%. Demand has risen as the low cost sector expanded.  In 2005 only 13.7% of flights were low cost compared to 31.7% in 2017.

Demand is at its highest in June and August when prices are 20% higher on average.
