Remco Evenepoel victorious at Clásica San Sebastián

19-year-old Remco Evenepoel has taken the first WorldTour win of his career at the Clásica San Sebastián in the Spanish Basque Country. The young rider from Schepdaal in Flemish Brabant powered to a solo victory, dropping his fellow attackers on the final climb and holding off the chase group on the run to the race’s finishing line.

The win is the most important of the Deuninck-Quick-Step rider’s career so far.

The 227-kilometer race the Spanish Basque Country includes numerous  short steep climbs, building up to over  5,000 meters altitude across. It includes no fewer than 7 categorised climbs, including the final Alto de Murgil, 1.9km, a 10.8 percent average gradient kick which peaked just 10km to the finish line.

The junior time trial world champion used his prowess against the clock to maintain his advantage on the final flat stretch, winning by 38 seconds. Behind him, Greg Van Avermaet (CCC) won the sprint for second, with Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) came in third.

Speaking after the race Remco Evenpoel told j ournalists, “I dreamed one day to win this race, but not today,”

“It was a big risk to go in the break so early, but I knew the power I could have on the climb,” I did not expect this. It’s incredible. I didn’t feel good early in the race. ”
