Romelu Lukaku leaves Man.United: "Escape from his golden cage"

The Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku (26) leaves the Premier League after 8 years to join Inter Milan.

Lukaku started with Chelsea, but later joined West Bromwich, in order to move to Everton and then later to Manchester United, where he has played for 2 years. The tall, strong striker had a conflict with United coach Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer and was bound to leave Manchester.

In fact, he had trained with Anderlecht's youth team (at his former club) to make a statement as the arm-wrestling with Man. United was continuing. "He found himself caught in a golden cage, after United had said they didn't count on him anymore, but Inter has offered him an elegant way out", the VRT's football pundit Peter Vandenbempt said.

Lukaku came to Manchester for 85 million euros; Inter is now paying 70 million. In 8 seasons in the English top flight, Lukaku scored 113 goals in 250 games, which puts him in the all-time top-20 of Premier League top scorers. "His statistics are amazing. But some will say he mostly scored against the smaller teams. He will not be remembered as one of the biggest strikers ever in the Premier League, which is what he wanted. In that respect, it's a disappointment for him", Vandenbempt said.
