Kinepolis goes American

The Belgian cinema group Kinepolis is expanding to the United States.  Kinepolis is taking over a US company that runs ten cinema complexes in the state of Michigan.

Kinepolis is snapping up MJR Digital Cinemas after it expanded to Canada last year acquiring Landmark Cinemas. MJR Digital Cinemas operates ten cinemas with 164 screens and over 20,000 seats.  MJR cinemas are described as multi and megaplexes with between ten and twenty screens.  The ten MJR cinemas attracted 6.2 million visitors last year and had a turnover of 81.2 million dollars.

Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group: “The successful takeover (of Landmark Cinemas in Canada) showed we can implement our business strategy successfully in a different continent and in different time zones. “

The takeover values the US cinemas at 137.2 million euros.  The US cinemas will continue to operate under the MJR brand.
