Mertens through to the quarter finals at the US Open

Our compatriot Elise Mertens stormed through her match against the American wildcard Kristie Ahn to earn a place in the quarter finals of US Open in New York. Just a month ago Kristie Ahn beat Elise Mertens in San José. However, despite US Open wins against, amongst others, the former French Open women’s champion Jelena Ostapenko, and the 27-year-old American was unable to do the same against Mertens on Monday.

Elise Mertens put in a strong performance to say the least. Her 1-6, 1-6 victory saw the 23-year-old from Limburg province make it to the quarter finals of the US Open for the first time. If she wants to reach the semi-finals she will have to beat the Canadian Bianca Andreessen, who is ranked 15th in the world.

Speaking after her victory against Kristie Ahn, Elise Mertens told VRT Sport “I was well prepared. I recently lost to Ahn in two sets so I changed my tactics. I played more directly. She plays aggressively and I turned it to my advantage”. I hope that I can maintain

"I will try and stay focussed and hopefully the quarter final won’t be the end of the road for me”, Elise Mertens added.
