The police officer wanted to check the identity of a man in a car, when the man drew a gun. A second police officer fired on the gunman, who was injured and taken to hospital where he subsequently died.
The incident happened this morning. A resident had called the police because of a badly parked car. Police wanted to check the identity of the person in the car, who appreared to be sleepy and drunk, when shots were fired. The man who was killed was known to the police for drugs offences.
Emergency services attended the scene and cordoned off the street. Liège burgomaster Willy Demeyer confirmed the events: “This has triggered a lot of emotion in Liege.”
Today’s shooting rekindles memories of a shooting in May of last year when two Liege police officers and a student were shot dead.
The injured police officer is around 30 years of age and the father of two.
