Future of Antwerp water bus in doubt

The water bus service on the River Scheldt in Antwerp has been a great success. Nevertheless, the future of the service is uncertain as the Antwerp Port Authority intends to stop financing the service.

During August more than 100,000 passengers took the waterbus, bringing the total number of passengers so far this year to 800,000. Such is the success of the service that some potential passengers have had to be refused.

Currently, the Antwerp Port Authority provides funding for the service. However, the Antwerp Alderman responsible for the port Annick De Ridder (nationalist) told VRT Radio 2 that “We can’t expect the port to carry on providing funding. However, we will do all we can to find funding from an alternative authority i.e. Flanders. It is a success, not least among commuters and we need to look from which level it can continue to be given funding”.
