Belgian Champions outplayed and outclassed by Red Bull Salzburg

The Belgian League Champions KRC Genk suffered a humiliating 6-2 defeat in the first game of their Champions League campaign. It was evident from the outset that Salzburg would be a tough nut to crack. The Austrians took the lead after just 2 minutes when Haland made the most of Genk’s poor defending to put Salzburg 1-0.

Harland made it 2-0 on 34 minutes with Hee-Chan putting Salzburg three-up just 2 minutes later. Lucumi pulled one back for Genk on 40 minutes. Haland completed his first half hat-trick on 45 minutes. Szoboszlai scored in the second minute of stoppage time and the half ended 5-1 to Salzburg.

Given their four-goal deficit and their first half performance, a Euromillions jackpot win seemed more likely than Genk making a second half comeback.  Samatta score Genk’s second and final goal of the evening on 52 minutes.

However, it was always going to be too little, too late. Ulmer made it 6-2 on 66 minutes and Genk’s humiliation was complete. Against the team considered to be the “easiest” for them to beat, KRC Genk were outclassed at all level. It will be interesting to see what they are able to do against the big boys in their group Napoli and Liverpool.
