Ideology: Thinking about ideals and political visions

Dit Engelstalig lesmateriaal kan worden ingezet in immersieonderwijs.

With the EDUbox Ideology, students learn about different ideals and how they determine our worldview. Those different ideals can lead to polyphony but also to conflict. This is not different in politics. So, how can you still get through one door and how can we live well together if your ideals are so different? This, and much more, is what students find out through a role-play exercise.

What’s in the EDUbox Ideology?

What your ideal society looks like may be very different from that of your best friend or neighbour. But which values form the foundation of your worldview? And why do ideologies sometimes clash?

In the EDUbox Ideology, students first reflect on their own worldview through a self-assessment test. They then learn how groups engage with an ideology and how this can lead to conflict and even hostility.

To better understand this, students explore three key ideological tensions, such as freedom versus equality. These tensions are placed on a compass that serves as a guide throughout the rest of the EDUbox. Students also plot the three classical ideologies on this compass: conservatism, liberalism, and socialism. Finally, they are introduced to the different Flemish political parties and their main ideals.

In the active part of this EDUbox, students learn how to navigate these ideological tensions. For this purpose, we developed the debate game Together Through One Door, a role-playing exercise in which they learn to argue their case while also finding common ground. Afterwards, they reflect on how an argument can be connected to a particular ideology.
